Nancy Magee asked:

Most people do not eat a balanced diet rich in a variety nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. I often hear people complain because they do not like fruits and vegetables so they cannot eat right. However, our bodies were not designed to live off cheese burgers and French fries. We were designed to kill animals and harvest fruits and vegetables. I do understand that it’s tough to get the recommended 6-10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. That’s where nutritional supplements come in. They can help you reach the necessary daily intake of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients when you cannot get enough through diet alone. While there is NO substitute for a well balanced, fruit and vegetable rich diet, supplements will help on your road to good health.

Vital Nutrients We Need Every Day:
Calcium: 1,000-1,300 mg a day
Sources of calcium: ½ cup cooked spinach = 120mg.
8 oz plain, low-fat yogurt = 415mg. 8 oz 2% milk = 297mg
Why we need it: Calcium helps prevent risk or decrease severity of osteoporosis. It helps our bones to become strong and hard. Calcium is also necessary for muscle action. Several studies have also shown a link between higher calcium intakes with lower body weight.

Vitamin D: 500-2000 IU a day
Sources of Vit. D: fortified milk or orange juice = 100-125 IU. 1 whole egg = 25 IU The majority of our vitamin D is synthesized (made) by our body from exposure to sunlight
Why we need it: Vitamin D helps our bones absorbed calcium thus helping prevent osteoporosis. Vitamin D has been shown to reduce the risk of many types of cancers. Vitamin D consumption also has links to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Fiber: 20-35 g a day
Sources of fiber: Apple = 3g. 1 cup black beans = 19g. ½ cup raw broccoli = 7g
Why we need it: Fiber aids digestion by working in your colon to create solid waste and to keep the colon functioning. Fiber also reduces risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes by reducing triglyceride levels in the blood and helping the body excrete unneeded waste.

Probiotics: No set recommendation for daily intake
Sources: Yogurt
Why we need it: Our bodies have good bacteria in them all the time. These bacteria help with absorption of nutrients, breakdown of food, removal of waste, and fighting off disease and bad bacteria. We need to build up our good bacteria to stay healthy and keep our immune system working properly.

Other vitamins we need every day for various reasons:
C: 45-100mg/ day – Antioxidant

E: 15 mg/ day – Antioxidant

Folate: 400 ug/ day – Works with amino acids (proteins)

A: Aids vision, aids gene expression and reproduction.

Niacin – Required for energy production

Thiamin – Aids in metabolism of carbohydrates

B12 – Works with nucleic acid (part of DNA) metabolism

B6 – Aids amino acid (protein) metabolism

Riboflavin – Coenzyme

Vitamin K – Involved in blood clotting and bone metabolism

Iodine – Aids thyroid hormone function

Zinc – Helps regulate gene expression

Iron – Component of hemoglobin (blood)

Potassium – Regulates fluid levels

Chromium – helps regulate blood glucose (sugar)

Going on a multi-vitamin can help you achieve all of the recommended daily allowances. These recommendations are the United States Department of Agriculture dietary guidelines.
At Arkansas Physical Medicine we have a variety of nutritional supplementation that we recommend to patients to help them achieve better health. The supplements that we offer here are backed by extensive research and are held to higher regulation than supplements sold in the United States.

Adrian Joele asked:

Without science and technology, our lifespan would not have been increased as much as we experience it today. However, they were not be able to secure for us our long-term health. As Dr. Myron Wentz, founder of USANA Health Sciences likes to phrase it: “We are living too short and dying too long.”

Healthy living means:keeping a balanced, healthy diet, avoiding smoking, excessive use of alcohol and toxic chemicals, taking regular exercise and supplementing our diet with high quality nutritional supplements.

The nutrients have to be in a form that the cells of our body can except them and the cells have to be in optimum condition to be able to absorb the nutrients. These are the keys to successful nutrition and two often overlooked facts.

Maintaining your health is much easier than trying to regain it. When you are struggling with your health, you can empower your body to fight and even reverse chronic diseases.

By providing the necessary nutrients at optimal levels, your LDL cholesterol is more resistant to oxidation, your eyes have greater antioxidant protection from sunlight and you provide optimal protection for your lungs. You increase your immune system and antioxidant defence system.

You decrease the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson disease and more.

People who are suffering from a chronic degenerative disease are under greater oxidative stress than normal. In this case, optimizers are important to use in order to support any existing nutritional program.

It’s been scientifically proven that there are substantial health benefits in taking nutritional supplements. The benefits of nutritional supplements are scientifically verified over the past two years. Hundreds of scientific studies have proved that nutritional supplements can significantly reduce the risk of degenerative diseases.

The American Medical Association (AMA) now encourages all adults to supplement daily with a multiple vitamin. Based on a landmark review of 38 years of scientific evidence by Harvard researchers, Dr Robert Fletcher and Dr Kathleen Fairfield, the conservative Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has rewritten its policy guidelines regarding the use of vitamin supplements. In a striking departure from its previous anti-vitamin rhetoric, JAMA (June19,2002) now recommends that, given our nutrient-poor modern diet, supplementation each day with a multiple vitamin is a prudent preventive measure against chronic disease.

The researchers point out that more than 80% of the American population does not consume anywhere near the five to eight servings of fruits and vegetables required each day for optimal health.

Dr Robert Fletcher, co-author of the groundbreaking JAMA studies, states: All of us grew up believing that if we ate a reasonable diet, that would take care of our vitamin needs. But the new evidence, much of it in the last couple of years, is that vitamins also prevent the usual diseases we deal with every day – heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, and birth defects.

Most people simply accept the onset of arthritis, heart disease and diabetes as inevitable results of the aging process — the truth is, these conditions are largely preventable. Health is a matter of CHOICE. If we chose to make good nutrition – including supplementation -and an active lifestyle a daily habit, we could add 5 to 15 healthy years to our lives. Apart from the future benefits, eating well and exercising regularly also enable us to enjoy life so much more right now!

Dave Tupniak asked:

People tend to look upon nutritional supplements differently according to their ages. Usually, young people never think of taking supplements to satisfy their nutritional needs. As we age, we tend to become more health conscious and want to prolong our health as we get older. One way that we can help ourselves feel better as well as function more efficiently is to take nutritional supplements.

You are not going to find a supplement which can provide you with the fountain of youth, but there are supplements that you can take which will make a big difference in the way you look and feel. Nutritional supplements have been used for many, many years to alleviate the symptoms of getting older as well as help the body fight off illness and disease.

So the question remains, should someone who is otherwise young and healthy consider taking a nutritional supplement? Well to answer that question consider this, a food is only as good as the nutrients in the soil. Plants draw their nutrients from the soil they are rooted in, so if the nutrients in the soil are poor, so will the nutrients be poor in the fruit or vegetable that you are eating. Soil nutrient levels are the reason that fertilizers are being used more and more every few years. The lower the nutrient level in the soil, the more fertilizer it will take to grow produce of any size.

Another thing you will need to consider is the freshness of the produce that we purchase. Nutrients in foods made over time after it has reached maturity and has been harvested. Then there is also the next step in the chain which is the preparation of the food. To get the most out of the food you eat, they should be eaten in a properly prepared manner, or even eaten raw. Of course we are just talking about plant matter here, not meat. Many times as vegetables are boiled, the nutrients are leaked out into the water and lost down the drain. This does not do your body any good at all. You are advised to steam your vegetables instead of boiling them when possible.

That is not to say that there are not some individuals who proclaim that taking nutritional supplements are a waste of money. Many people state the fact that a lot of supplements taken are in fact just cycled through the body and sent out with the body’s waste. However it is a fact that there is a recent upswing in the amount of recommendations given by health professionals for their patients to take a nutritional supplement. If you are at all concerned with your current health, speak to your physician and ask if taking supplements would be of benefit to you.

Mike Singh asked:

When we think of the word ‘Supplement’, we normally think of something that accompanies something essential. However, nutritional supplements can by themselves be an essential part of a healthy nutrition plan.

Nutritional supplements can be beneficial for those leading a busy lifestyle as well as individuals with physiological or genetic conditions. Human beings all require a certain amount of vital biochemicals and this proportion varies just slightly from person to person.

Even when one tries to eat a nutritionally well balanced diet they might not always get the required amount of nutrients. Sometimes people may require supplements because they follow a rigorous exercise regime or they lead a sedentary lifestyle at work. Since individuals are unique, they require a particular amount of a certain nutrient that differs slightly from others.

For example B-Complex vitamins are essential for everyone. But the recommended dosage varies from person to person depending on their weight and physiology. Similarly for some a multivitamin pill can be more than enough to supply the nutrients that they are unable to get from a balanced diet. However, others might require specialized kinds or added amounts of nutritional supplements to maintain optimal health.

The human body has the ability to absorb the required nutrients like Vitamin C and eliminate the excess through the urine. Unfortunately, what ones consumes today might not be adequate for tomorrow and that is why one should make up for such deficits through supplements or a proper diet.

Vitamin C is a commonly taken supplement that is essential to curbing diseases such as scurvy and rickets. Though these ailments are not common today especially in developed countries, studies have found that adequate quantities of Vitamin C actually helps strengthen the immune system and reduce the occurrence of colds and other infections.

When it comes to Calcium, most older people in general do not consume much of it as compared to infants and young children. To an extent, it is normal and healthy because younger adults do not require the same amounts of calcium as children.

Nevertheless, as people grow older their bones tend to produce lesser amounts of calcium and so it becomes very important for people especially those who are lactose intolerant or who don’t like the taste of milk in general to consume the required amounts of calcium through supplements.

Another example where nutritional supplements prove to be very effective is by providing adequate quantities of Omega 3 fatty acids. These fatty acids help prevent heart diseases and reduce inflammation. However, its primary dietary source – fish may not always have enough Omega 3 because the local fish supply is temporarily unsafe or it may not appeal to everyone’s taste buds. In such cases nutritional supplements serve as an excellent alternative.

Many supplements also help in balancing out hormonal imbalances that effect both men and women. Soy is one such supplement that can help reduce the occurrence of Menopause and PMS (Premenstrual syndrome) symptoms. Some even help to treat thyroid imbalances.

Cortisol is another example of a supplement that can be consumed. Most individuals are able to produce adequate amounts of this hormone. In spite of this people can at times suffer from a deficiency because of a gland weakened by illness, genetic disposition or age. Symptoms of this deficiency include fatigue and aching joints, but these can be avoided by consuming cortisol supplements.

It is always advisable to undergo a thorough examination before taking more than the average recommended dosage of a daily vitamin as it might have adverse effects. Ginko, for example can lead to excessive bleeding in some. However, once you have determined the nutritional supplements that are most suited to you, they can really help in achieving and maintaining optimal health.
